Press Release on Celebration of 4th International Day of Yoga at Thimphu, Bhutan

The Embassy of India in Thimphu successfully organized a Mega Yoga Session to commemorate the 4th International Day of Yoga at the India House Estate Ground on 24th June, 2018.

Hon’ble Prime Minister DashoTsheringTobgay was the Chief Guest onthe occasion. Other prominent dignitaries included Lyonpo Jigme Zangpo, Hon’ble Speaker of National Assembly, Lyonpo Lekey Dorji, Hon’ble Minister of Economic Affairs, Lyonpo (Dr.) Pema Gyamtsho, Hon’ble Leader of Opposition. The participants in the event included members of the Parliament of Bhutan, Secretaries and other high dignitaries from the Royal Government of Bhutan, foreign diplomats, young children from selected schools and colleges, members of the Indian community and yoga enthusiasts and regular practitioners. More than 500 participants (400 Bhutanese and 150 Indians approximately) took part in this mega event with great enthusiasm and vigour.

The Yoga session started with Prayer, and systematic practice of different ‘ASANAS” of standing, sitting and laying positions smoothly changing in succession under the instructions of Yoga teacher.

Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS), the national television of Bhutan, covered the entire event. The recording will be aired in the evening in their English and Dzongkha news channels. Correspondents from all major Bhutanese newspapers were present at the venue to cover the event.

The celebration concluded with recitation of Shanti Mantras like previous years. After the Yoga session refreshments were served to all the participants. As a special gesture, plant saplings was also distributed among the participants.

As a part of the IDY celebrations, the Embassy had organised various events throughout the week. These included Flash Yoga mobs on 17 June 2018, at the traditional bridge near the Farmer’s market, at the iconic Centenary Park and at the famous tourist spot, the Buddhapoint. Local Bhutanese enthusiasts had organised an innovative special session of Aqua Yoga on 19 June 2018, under the supervision of the Nehru Wangchuck Cultural Centre.The live streaming of the Mass Yoga Demonstration of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was screened on 21st June at the Nehru Wangchuck Cultural Centre, where a number of people performed yoga simultaneously. An impromptu Yoga session was also organised at the Clock Tower on 21 June 2018, which saw participation by bystanders. All these sessions garnered immense public interest and participation.

The celebration of 4th international Day of Yoga received positive accolades from all sections of Bhutan. The Embassy received full support from the Royal Government of Bhutan and other local agencies in successfully organizing the event.
